Antarctic Tapestry 2009

In 2007 Susan Wood travelled on a small expedition ship to The Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. The piece reflects her exposure to this hostile, windy, isolated yet stunning area often described as the most remote wilderness in the world. Unfamiliar sounds suggest the unknown, length and repetition reflect the distance and sense of timelessness, church bells the desolation. An unsettling experience in many ways it was two years before she felt able to create this work which played in 10 Days in The Laundry [2009] an exhibition organized by The Yard Artists╩╝ Studios, Winchester. Sited with sculptures in an open upstairs area it formed an aural backdrop for works and events throughout the extensive space.
