The Russian Far East (2011)

In June 2011 Susan Wood flew across Siberia to Sakhalin Island where she joined a small expedition boat from which they explored the Kuril and Commander Islands. An extremely remote volcanic area with few inhabited islands there was a strong feeling of the strength of the elements, the supremacy of the wildlife - sea birds, whales and sea otters.

One of the most powerful and desolate places they explored was the deserted Russian submarine base on the island of Simushir. Material from this experience formed part of Feeling Small [2011] an exhibition by five artists in the gallery space in Harbour Lights cinema complex at Ocean Village , Southampton.
